Back to MSFT == new laptop
Posted: 31 Aug 2005 at 10:31 by d0m1
In keeping with posts about lovely laptops, I'll be buying this today: Beautiful... 200GB of RAID0 @ 7200RPM... =) My productivity has really suffered in the last few months, and crazy as it might sound, I'm sure it's because my current antiquated machine is just too slow: P4M 1.7Ghz (one of th

What is happening re. spam?
Posted: 15 Jun 2005 at 13:17 by d0m1
How did the migration on SQLJ go? When is DNJ going to be migrated? Why is it not possible to totally disable comments during the transition? In the last week I've received several hundred spam. They're winning, and as far as I'm concerned, we're just letting them. It's shameful if the community at

Now that autoCode is out of the door, I'm entering a rigourous feature cycle: up to this point, I've been focussed soley on getting released. Now that we're there, the focus switches back to the users: to their feedback and their feature-requests. So, please download it and tell me what feature

PCs Affecting the Mind
Posted: 27 May 2005 at 20:06 by d0m1
A couple of random observations about excessive PC use: 1. When I have lots of text on the clipboard that I haven't got saved elsewhere, I have a "feeling". It's almost physical like the text is being preciously kept in some secret compartment of my brain which only the magic left hand keypress sequ

Saw some feedback on one of Raymond's posts that really struck a chord with me: If I google for DisplayIcon on the web I get Raymond's page as the top link! If I search MSDN (or MSDN online) I get *nothing*. If it wasn't for third party sites offering registry tips how would you ever know what some

Software like icecream

Just read Benjamin's spirited post regarding software quality at msft. I'm engaged in a bug-fixing cycle in autoCode at the moment, and let me tell you: it's hard. Very difficult indeed to write even moderately complex software that functions according to the users' expectations all of the time

Business is Hard

More good stuff from The Business of Software. There are several comments on that thread that struck a chord with me. In particular, the mentallity of the typical software developer is such that they tend to focus on the details that are required in order to write code. But the business of shipping

Joel reiterates how crucial VMWare / VitualPC is to efficient software development. +1. I remember when I got hold of VirtualPC and had a play with it. I'd been told it was good, but I was always very sceptical about emulating a machine on my desktop; I thought that it would be slow, and that t
