Can't connect to SQL Server Management Studio Express

    Hi,

I am trying to connect to SQL Server 2005. When I open SQL Server 2005, it prompts me to connect to the server.  Then, I am asked to type in the server name.  My first question, is the server name your computer?  If so, how do you determine you computer name?  Second, I tried putting in the IP address and received this error:

    TITLE: Connect to Server
    ------------------------------

    Cannot connect to 69.120.134.39.

    ------------------------------
    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server.  When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 2)

    What am I doing wrong?

What application are you opening? Hmm, it is often that when you open the sql server management studio, the server name is already typed in.

Server name is the computer name of the unit where the sql server 2005 is installed. (AFAIK, ü)

How to determine your computer name? Right-click > Properties > Computer Name, in line Full computer name:

Are you sure you can connect to 69.120.134.39? Try to ping it first. [Start > run > cmd > type in "ping 69.120.134.39"] Will it return "reply from..."?

Just trying to help here, not sure if I can, ü

Thanks.  I pinged it first and it did return the IP address.  So, my IP address does work. I also tried typing computername\SQLEXPRESS; it still threw an error.  I'm really not sure at this point what is wrong.

    What application are you using?

Do you have username and password in your connection string? Can you show it here?

What do you mean what application am I using?  Right now, I am just trying to connect to the database by opening up SQL Server Management Studio Express.  I haven't written any code yet.

    aahhh....

To make sure that your network can see the unit you are accessing, try to browse the server you desired instead of typing it.

Desperate move is to reinstall your sql 2005, wehehe..

2 other things I would check are:

    1. Is the SQLServer Express service started? If you go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services, you should see a SQLServer (SQLEXPRESS) service which should be started.

2 Normally, you would only need to refer to the below if connecting to SQL Server from a remote machine. However, it might be worth you following the first part of this and turning on TCP/IP remote connections through the Surface Area Configuration tool.
