Hi all,
I am posting this article in the hope that we can possibly attract some new developers to help with the K-Meleon web browser project. Currently we have no active developers so we are hoping that somebody might be interested in taking charge of the project, and help develop future versions of the application.
K-Meleon web browser is mainly based on the MFC-Embed Mozilla project, the concepts of which are explained here:
http://www.mozilla.org/projects/embedding/
The browser itself is coded in C++, with the GRE (Gecko Rendering Environment) being the element which is embedded within the application itself. Because of this the browser itself is lighter and faster than the regular Mozilla SeaMonkey & Firefox browsers, which are XUL based.
Being MFC means that the browser is currently only developed for the Windows platform, which allows for the usage of native Windows widgets etc. in the application and is thus free from the need for any cross-platform coding.
K-Meleon itself is a highly configurable application, as it has it's own macro based system which allows for an unlimited amount of user defined functions and configurations. It is also theme-able, with an already well-established collection of skins and themes available from the K-Meleon homepage.
At the moment the latest official version of K-Meleon (v0.9) is based upon v1.7.5 of the Gecko Runtime Environment. In the near future we are hoping to establish a development team, with the aim of rolling out a new version of K-Meleon based upon the latest security release version of Gecko (v1.7.12). This version will basically be a service release with an incremental release number of v0.9.1. If this release goes well then our future aims will be to push towards a v1.0 K-Meleon release based upon v1.8 of the GRE.
If there are any interested developers here interested in becoming involved with the K-Meleon project, then you can either contact me directly and I will point you in contact with the right people, or contact the project via the developers mailing list based at SourceForge.
