  • When do programming languages become obsolete?

Published on 15 Jul 2006 from

A couple of things I heard recently got me thinking about the question of the life span of a programming language. I think it was Andrew Watson, at his recent talk on Modelling for Maintainaibility, who mentioned that programming languages become obsolete about every 15 years or so. The second comment was in a Software Engineering Radio [...]

  • Windows backslash is IBM's fault?

Published on 15 Jul 2006 from

The backslash-as-directory-separator symbolizes what is wrong with Windows. It's an unnecessary deviation from a standard (forward slash) which causes real hassle and inconvenience, for example, see Julia Lerman's post on the subject. Now Charles Petzold and Larry Osterman have explained the reason for this - allegedly it's all because IBM didn't want to change the DOS 1.x switch character, used when adding arguments to a command-line instruction.

In a way, the story does symbolize what is wrong, or right, with Windows. Windows has remarkably good backwards compatibility, but at a heavy cost in terms of anomalies and security issues.

  • Contact email was snarfed

Published on 15 Jul 2006 from

If you have tried to contact me then chances are it never got through, the contact me setting was enabled in CS but it had no email address (which strikes me as weird code logic), it's all setup now.

  • see you at MGX and TechReady

Published on 15 Jul 2006 from

...if you are a Microsoft employee that is...

MGX is Microsoft's global sales conference and TechReady is the internal technical conference (think TechEd for MSFT personnel only).

I am thrilled to be attending TechReady3 in Seattle and also looking forward to catching up with people in Redmond that I know from my MVP days and others that I have only met virtually since joining here.

I cannot put my hand on heart and say that I am "super-excited" to be going to MGX (and probably won't ever go again) but everybody has to do it once… apparently. Having said that, MGX is in Orlando and I haven't been there before so that's cool. If I am lucky I will do some SCUBA diving and maybe go say hello to mickey mouse (no I am not talking about any current or ex-colleagues :-p).

Not sure if I'll blog or check email that often from the States so wish me a nice holiday business trip.

Flying out in a few hours and will be back in August :-)

  • Here comes the widgetsphere

Deirdre Molloy of NMK has noticed something...and I like it...

She's got the details, so I won't repeat here...

...but if you know the UK online scene at all, the names Bowbrick (my blogdaddy) and Pope (recently in Seattle) should be familiar to you. And if they aren't today, they will be...So will Sniperoo (blog here).

Look out San Fran. Here comes the widgetsphere.
